Chico Rotary Plaza project manager Frank Shanks and Maureen Pierce, executive director of the Chico Boys and Girls Club, check out the installation of a flagpole and new gateway arches Wednesday.
Work continued on Chico Rotary Plaza Wednesday as two gateway arches and a flagpole were added. The area between the Chico Boys and Girls Club and the teen center on a closed portion of Wall Street between East Sixth and Seventh streets is now illuminated at night, and sod has been laid. Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Maureen Pierce said nearly every aspect of the plaza has been donated by the community, including materials and labor for the arches, the contracting, the concrete, the trees and grass.

Construction has been ongoing for about seven months. The next phase of the project is construction on the adjacent teen center and gym, which is slated to start next month and is expected to be completed by summer 2005. Standing with Pierce admiring the arch are Fred Shanks (left), project manager, and Chico Rotary President Walt Schafer.
